This Friday, I leave for an incredible conference in Raleigh, North Carolina. Photographers, website builders, calligraphers, and so many more creative will be gathering for the Creative at Heart Conference. My heart is so full and I am so excited to be a part of this group of creatives who are yearning to grow.
I wanted to share a few tips for how I prepare for conferences in the creative industry! Let’s talk about what to bring to a conference so you can make the most of your time.
1. A notebook and your favorite pen!
I am a huge list person, and I have a slight obsession with notebooks(is 300 too many?). So one of the things I will be bringing with me to my conference is a brand new notebook and my favorite pen! Some conferences and workshops will provide you with a notebook, but I really love bringing my own.
2. A light sweater
Even though it’ll be 90 degrees in Raleigh during my confernece, I will be bringing a light sweater for the conference rooms. You never know if it’s going to be chilly during a workshops and it’s hard to concentrate if you are shivering!!
3. An open heart
Bring an open mind and an open heart to everything you do, but especially educational events like a conference. This is a time for you to grow and learn! One of my favorite things to do at conferences is pick a group of strangers and ask if I can sit with them. This might sound terrifying to all of you introverts out there, but it’s a lot easier than you think. I usually have to work the courage up to do this, but I’ve met some of my best friends in the industry this way! All you have to do is smile and ask politely. Most people at conferences want to meet new people.
4. An extra phone charger.
Y’all, my phone dies so quickly these days. Having an extra charger or an external battery is one of the best pieces of advice I can give you. Carry it with you in your purse so that you can charge your phone when you need it. Plus it might make you a new friend when someone else is running low on battery charge!
Have you ever tried concentrating when you’re hungry? It’s the WORST! Bring along a snack pack with you to your conference. I usually go to a local grocery store when I arrive to the conference city. I pick up almonds and peanuts, protein bars, and fruit because they can be eaten just about anywhere(and they don’t smell!). Pro tip: Before you get there, make sure to complete the registration process. Some conferences have online registration sites like Eventbrite that you can use to register for your event. If you are planning on hosting a conference or workshop, you can use Eventbrite’s online registration section as a great resource.
I am so excited to attend Creative at Heart! I hope these tips will help you prepare for your next conference in the creative industry!!
